Paul Hogarth green plaque in Kendal

Paul Hogarth, RA, artist and writer, was born in this house in 1917. He was the son of a Westmorland hill farmer at Lowgill. He trained at Manchester and at St. Martin's School of Art in London and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1974. He travelled worldwide exhibiting in many countries.

As a book illustrator, he worked with famous writers including Brendan Behan, John Betjeman and Grahame Greene. Much of his work was strongly architectural and examples are held in Kendal at the Abbot Hall Art Gallery. He died in 2001.

Paul Hogarth, OBE, RA (christened Arthur Paul Hoggarth)[citation needed] (4 October 1917 – 27 December 2001) was an English artist and illustrator. He is best known for the cover drawings that he prepared in the 1980s for the Penguin edition of Graham Greene's books. He was a descendent of William Hogarth.
