Dolly Pentreath (died in 1777)

Dolly Pentreath, or Dorothy Pentreath (baptised 1692, died December 1777), was probably the last fluent, native speaker of the Cornish language, prior to its revival in 1904, from which time some children have been raised as bilingual native speakers of revived Cornish. Although she is known as the last monolingual speaker of the language – the last person who spoke only Cornish, and not English – her own account as recorded by Daines Barrington contradicts this.
